Bird of paradise (strelitzia nicolai) are known for their lush and very tropical foliage. They are stunning plants with their tall stems and wide banana-esque leaves.

They don't always flower when kept indoors and their leaves tear a little bit on the edges naturally

Light: Birds of paradise grow best in bright, indirect light. Too much direct sun could scorch the leaves, but they do love the sun. They can cope for some short periods in partial shade but long term they want sun sun sun all the way. 

Water: Keep the soil moist but not soggy in the spring and summer. Water it when the top inch or so of soil has dried out light and crumbly. In the autumn and winter, it's ok to let the soil to dry out a little more. 

Humidity: These plants like an increased level of humidity but they can usually cope in normal household conditions. 

Height and growth rate: In warm conditions these plants can be fast growing and reach 5 to 6 metres tall. Indoors, they reach about 3 metres tall. 

Feed: Give it a weak dose of liquid feed around every 3-4 weeks in the spring and summer. 

Toxicity: Mildly toxic if ingested. 

Origin: Southern Africa.
